| Faculty Day was held on the 20th March 2010 for the second year running at the beautiful Conway Hall in Holborn, London. Faculty Open Day is a day for students to celebrate their success in the exams and give prospective students a taste of what the Faculty is all about! The day kicked off with a word from the new president Carole Taylor, followed by The Student Forum chaired by Julia Savage, Faculty Day organiser. This year was the 5th Student Forum with four very diverse speakers from all around the world; very fitting given the Faculty’s chart has Sagittarius rising. Rodolphe Chang was the first student speaker to present his talk, entitled 'Chiron: An Outsider through the Signs'. He talked us through the historical events that correlated with Chiron through each sign; for example, the period of Chiron in Aries correlated with the suffragette movement. The next student speaker was Jadranka Coic, who spoke about 'Nikola Tesla: Master of Lighting'. She presented Nikola Tesla’s biographical events and related these to his chart. She also looked at his amazing inventions that changed the world as we know it. Jules Genik concluded the morning programme with her talk on ‘Japanese Star Worship’, a subject that has been little researched to date. She talked us through the history of Japanese Star Worship and how the Emperors consulted and placed great importance on the ‘Onmyoji’, the equivalent to medieval astrologers in the western tradition. Student Forum Speakers (from top left to bottom right): Rodolphe Chang, Jadranka Coic, Jules Genik, & Henrik Bisbo Lunch time gave the students the opportunity to meet their tutors, browse the book stall and other stands. Students caught up with old friends from various modules and ‘astro-babbled’ amongst them selves as they ate their lunch. There was a fantastic buzz in the air! The afternoon programme began with the final Student Forum speaker, Henrik Bisbo. The title of his talk was ‘An affair with Richard Tarnas’. He gave us a wonderful presentation consisting of his personal journey of reading Richard Tarnas’s books, ‘The Passion of the Western Mind’ and ‘Cosmos and Psyche’, alongside presenting some of their key ideas. He shared his feelings of accomplishment after completing these books, as he admitted it was no easy task. All four talks were very diverse and interesting with new insights shared and new thoughts awakened. The Student Forum was followed by The Awards Ceremony. Students were now reaping the benefits of all their hard work! Gloria Roca, the Exam Chair, spoke about the dedication and time that goes into completing the exams. She informed us that only 449 out of 12,000 students had been awarded Faculty Diplomas, proving it was no easy task but an immense achievement. Clare Martin, former president of the Faculty and guest speaker, presented the Certificates and Diplomas. The Certificate and Diploma holders were called to the stage and were presented with their award while a photograph was taken. The students were delighted to be receiving their awards as family and friends watched proudly. This was their moment of glory! Following the award ceremony our guest speaker Clare Martin presented a talk entitled ‘The Magic of Astrology’. She spoke about astrologers being neutral like Mercury and their role as translators from heaven to earth. She presented some humorous pieces on Mercury and astrology, and reflected on the role of the astrologer. It was a truly inspirational talk that gave everyone much to think about. President Carole Taylor concluded the day – she presented a Faculty Fellowship to Clare Martin for her exceptional contribution and dedication to the Faculty. Clare has been involved in the running of the Faculty for over 9 years and has held many roles within the Faculty’s management team, having been Council Secretary, Faculty Day Organiser, Class Co-ordinator and finally the President. The Faculty were delighted to award the Fellowship to Clare Martin and she was honoured to receive it. All in all it was a fantastic day and a very joyful event! |
