A Practitioner’s Guide to Traditional Astrology

The Divinatory Art of Horary Astrology

Horary astrology is a remarkably decisive technique that allows both astrologer and client to cut to the chase of a seemingly unsolvable dilemma. Through chart delineation, the client’s range of options are assessed and thoroughly explored. In this session we will study the guiding principles of horary technique, using both historical and modern examples. We will explore charts related to relationships and pregnancy, career and finance, missing objects and more, with a mind to what is generalizable across fields of questioning. Suitable for all levels, regardless of prior horary experience.

Casting Rays: A Traditional View of Aspects

The classical handling of aspects in Western astrology is a far cry from the cold, mechanical approach we often see. To understand the nature of aspects, we first need to understand planetary phase, the virtue and efficacy of each planet’s celestial (as opposed to physical) light, and the mechanism by which planets share their experiences. There’s a mysticism underlying astrological aspects that is all too often overlooked. Where did the mysticism go, and how do we bring it back? This lecture seeks to re-introduce the “why” and “how” of aspectual connections to sharpen even the most experienced astrologer’s toolkit.

Connections in Horary Astrology

As astrologers, we seek to form connections between the microcosm and the macrocosm through interpretation of planetary symbolism. Horary astrology often accomplishes this as a standalone technique, and yet each horary necessarily carries the signature of larger astrological cycles being unfolded in our client’s life. This talk explores horary’s relationship to natal, electional and resolution charts, and how these connections impact upon our understanding of the power and purpose of astrology.

Navigating Celestial Waters with Electional Astrology

Elections form the branch of astrology that focuses on selecting ideal times for the big decisions in our lives — when to open that bookstore, when to sign the lease on that new car, even when to cut your hair to increase or decrease growth. In this talk we will explore the guiding principles of electional astrology, complete with example charts and practical exercises. The techniques are simple and straightforward once understood and will better equip any practicing astrologer in their future elections. In a group discussion, we will also consider how elections fold into other branches of astrology.

Timing in Horary Astrology

Horary textbooks cover a lot of theoretical ground, but few really draw out the mechanics involved in assessing cycles to create a solid timeline of events. What techniques are consistently recorded? Are they all equally reliable? Is there a more straightforward approach that can be taken when timing horary figures? This presentation analyses modern and historical horary and event charts to demonstrate an organic approach to timing that underlines the ongoing cycles speaking to us in horary consultation. Suitable for all, irrespective of experience using horary astrology.

The Horary Astrologer’s Guide to Decumbiture

Historically, astrology and natural philosophy formed the cornerstone of medicine. Through decumbiture charts, astrologers assessed the true root of an illness, identified its severity and also its cure, while forecasting the cycle of critical periods. Decumbiture charts are judged very similarly to horary figures, with a few unique techniques. This presentation explores the basics of humour theory, the use of decumbiture charts through historical and modern chart examples, and the doctrine of sympathy and antipathy in determining cause of illness and the path to treatment.

Astrology’s Pinnacle: A Critical Review of Length of Life Techniques

Historical sources are hardly aligned on the determination steps for finding the hyleg (giver of life) and alcocoden (giver of years), yet the lion’s share of traditional natal texts rely on correctly identifying these key players in order to determine a native’s protected years and natural lifespan. How reliable are length of life techniques, really? We will review the earlier texts of Ptolemy and Dorotheus, as well as a cursory glance at medieval sources, to review controversial assumptions made in leveraging these techniques.

Plus, Wade will be with us for the Astrology in Action programme in the Five Day Course which follows. His lectures there include:

  • Missing Persons and Pets: An Application of Horary Technique

  • Undignified & Unapologetic: The Raw Creativity of Debilitated Planets

  • The Question of Astrological Magic
